After lying around, feeling sorry for myself, I got up and slipped on the robe hanging on the hook behind the bathroom door. I bundled myself up, slipped into my house shoes, then stuck my cell phone into my pocket. I needed a change of scenery—something that didn’t smell like the stench of regret and sorrow that hung around me in the air.

I also needed a place that didn’t smell like Boone. With every whiff of his scent, I wanted him back against my body.

I forced myself out of my bedroom and walked toward the massive living room window walls. I pulled up a chair and sat right in front of them, gazing out over the city that had fucked over my life in less than twenty-four hours. I pulled my cell phone out and had the bright idea to call my manager, Marjorie. Maybe she knew a way out of the hole I had dug for myself, especially since she had helped me climb the ranks in the gym after quitting my teaching gig.

I dialed her number and held the phone to my ear, hoping and praying she’d pick up. It was a Saturday evening, so for all I knew, she’d be out and about with her husband. But, when she picked up, and I heard her sweet, comforting voice, I broke down crying.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” she said. “Pump the brakes. What’s going on?”

I drew in broken breaths. “Everything is ruined.”

“Ruined, how? What’s wrong? Do I need to come over?”

I shook my head. “Not. Home.”

“Then where are you? I can come to get you.”

My hiccuping sobs were back full force. “In. Vegas.”

I cried over the phone to her without another word spoken. I cried so hard I thought I was going to vomit in my lap. The sun was just beginning to set, and it cast colors over the Vegas skyline that would have been beautiful on any other night, in any other scenario, with any other person.

But at that moment, it was yet another reminder of the beauty my life used to hold but didn’t any longer.

“All right,” Marjorie said after my crying calmed down, “start from the beginning. How did you get to Vegas?”

“Boone invited me, so I came along.”

“Okay, we’ll get into why you did that later. Where exactly in Vegas are you?”

I slouched into the chair. “It’s the new resort in Vegas that opened up, what, last year?”

“Ah, okay. I know which one you’re talking about.”

I nodded slowly. “Yeah. I’m up in the penthouse.”

“Penthouse is nice.”

I drew in a stable breath before I closed my eyes. “I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

“I mean, I’m still stuck on the fact that you actually went anywhere with someone, much less that massive man with tattoos all over his torso.”

I blinked. “Wait, what?”

“Yeah! Boone Remington, right? He came walking down the hallway, strutting his stuff one time, completely soaked like he took a damn shower with his clothes on.”

A flush crept up my spine. “Really?”

“Yep. Peacocking the fuck out of his stance, too.
